Urban delight

Rhode Island Greenways is actively promoting trail use across Rhode Island and not just in far-flung rural and wooded areas. A prime spot for hiking lies right in the capital city at Neutaconkanut Park. It has great views of the city and some really challenging trails. Old Spolks: Introducing a new East Greenwich-based group with a series of rides across Rhode Island designed to be low-key and informal. Riders should meet at 9:30 a.m. ride day and rides start at 10 a.m.sharp. Each ride includes two 2 phases. Short rides of approximately 10 to 20 miles and longer rides usually from 40 to 50 miles. Call Carol or Eran at 886-8638 and let them know if you plan to go. Check out their schedule.

New biking group!

The Blackstone River Bikeway Patrol is a new all-volunteer program, supported in part through a grant from the National Park Service and the Volunteers-In-Park Program of the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor. The group offers regular organized rides aimed at enhancing rider awareness of the historic area they are cycling through. Rhode Island Greenways hopes this program can become a model for other groups to follow on all of the state's major bike paths.

New places to ride: Construction update

Rain did not deter local, state and federal officials from opening the newest section of the Blackstone River Bikeway this spring.
The new segment features a beautiful 540-foot boardwalk through the Lonsdale Marsh.

Work to replace the Martin Street bridge in Lincoln (on the Blackstone River Bikeway) is complete!
The path now passes under Martin Street, offering a much safer option for cyclists as compared with the old design.

A view of the expansive waterfall at the Manville Dam, viewable from a new segment
of the Blackstone River Bikeway, which opened in November 2007.
The path now offers 10 miles of uninterrupted riding!

A 3.5-mile segment of the Fred Lippitt Woonasquatucket River Greenway/Northwest Bike Trail is now open.
This includes a scenic off road section from Aleppo Street in Olneyville to Lyman Avenue in Johnston.
Note: This path is located in a urban area, and the same precautions one might exercise walking or cycling
in an urban neighborhood should be followed when using this path.

Paving is finally complete for this section of the Coventry Greenway.
However, the path is not open yet. RIDOT expects to open the path this summer.

The Aquidneck Land Trust is developing a long-distance greenway in Portsmouth for hikers and equestrians.
