The Aquidneck Land Trust

The Aquidneck Land Trust is a very active conservation group on Aquidneck Island, which includes the communities of Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth. The Trust has about 2,000 acres it has preserved or preserved with partner agencies. The organization has two trail systems to explore:

Sakonnet Greenway Trail


Length: Two trails: 1.5 miles and 2.2 miles in length.

The Oakland Forest and Meadow Trail

Directions: From East Main Road or West Main Road in Portsmouth, turn onto Union Street. From Union Street, turn south onto Carriage Drive. Follow Carriage Drive west almost to the cul-de-sac. A parking area for the Oakland Forest & Meadow Trail will be on your left. Parking is available for only three cars. Follow this link for detailed trail information.

Conanicut Island Land Trust

The Conanicut Island Land Trust holds hundreds of acres of land on Conanicut Island, home to the Town of Jamestown. Among them are numerous working farms. A public trail system is available at: The Parker Farm, located betwwen East Shore Road and North Road on the northern half of the island. The trailhead is on East Shore Road.

The Glocester Land Trust

The Glocester Land Trust has eight properties it has helped protect across the town. All sites are open to the public from dawn to dusk. Detailed information is available at the Trust's website, linked to the Town of Glocester website. Trail lengths and trail descriptions are not available at this time. Follow the links below for property descriptions and directions:

  • Burton Woodland - On Joe Sweet Road in Chepachet, 112 acres abutting Sprague Farm and Robert Huckins Woodland.
  • Hawkins Pond - On Putnam Pike (Rte. 44) in West Glocester, about 10 acres in extent, and a system of streams are the most prominent in a 71-acre site.
  • Phillips Farm - On Putnam Pike (Rte. 44) in Harmony, an historic homestead of about 68 acres.
  • Robert Huckins Woodland - On Route 44 in Chepachet, a 176-acre area abutting both Sprague Farm and Burton Woodland.
  • Scotstun Town Forest - On Chopmist Hill Road (Rte. 102) in Chepachet, 46 acres with unusual diversity of wetlands species and several underground streams running through the site.
  • Signe Phillips Woodland - On Chopmist Hill Road (Rte. 102) in Chepachet, a 15-acre property is populated with an abundance of White Pine and Hemlock.
  • Sprague Farm - On Pine Orchard Road in Chepachet (at telephone pole #33, across from 162 Pine Orchard Road), abutting Burton Woodland and Robert Huckins Woodland with 250 acres.
  • Steere-Comber Wildlife Preserve - Off Whipple Road in Chepachet, farmed for five generations, this property is being allowed to return to its natural state.

    The South County Conservancy

    The The South County Conservancy, also known as Charlestown's Land Trust, has helped preserve more than 300 acres in Charlestown in the last decade. They have two properties with public access permitted. Trail lengths and trail descriptions are not available at this time. Click here for the main trails map page.   • Mill Pond Preserve - An 80-acre property that was once the site of the former Cross' Mill Hatchery.
  • Amos Green Farm - Site of a 1750 farm, with connections to the Nature Conservancy's Carter Preserve.

    The South Kingstown Land Trust

    The South Kingstown Land Trust has numerous properties it has helped protect throughout the town. There are three sites with trail systems.   • Browning Trail - A 2.5-mile trail passing through wetlands and wooded uplands.
  • DuVal Trail - A 2.4-mile trail features interesting glacial terrain with hills offering a great view of the ocean and Block Island on a clear day.
  • Thewlis Trail - A 0.8-mile trail that allows access to Thewlis Woods.

    South Side Community Land Trust



    The South Side Community Land Trust is an urban twist on the concept of land trusts, focusing on access to greenspace for community gardens in Providence. The Trust provides access to land, education and other resources so people in Greater Providence can grow food in environmentally sustainable ways and create community food systems where locally produced, affordable, and healthy food is available to all.

    The Westerly Land Trust

    The Westerly Land Trust has acquired dozens of properties over the years. They have four site open for public use, mostly hiking and some biking. The website has maps for two of its sites and information on all four. Trail lengths and trail descriptions are not available at this time.   • Champlain Glacier Park - Trails throughout the Preserve are blazed with white and blue markers.
  • Grills Preserve - A mostly open area with old roads that accomodate walking and biking.
  • Avondale - This property features a loope paved road that makes it easy for biking and walking.
  • Riverwood Preserve - There are numerous trails here but access is difficult with limited parking.
